The Basics of Divorce in Michigan

Michigan is a no-fault Divorce state. A complaint for divorce is based on the allegation that “there has been a breakdown of the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed and there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved.” No other grounds need or may be stated.

At least one spouse must have resided in the state of Michigan for at least 180 days and in the county in which the complaint for divorce is filed for at least 10 days prior to filing.
